Botanical Gardens Hakgala

Situated at the Northeast side of the famous Hakgala Mountain some 2,200 meters above sea level and part of the strict natural reserve of Hakgala, these thrilling gardens are situated in the salubrious cool climate within the lush green tea estates of Sri Lanka, and just 16km from the lovely town of ‘Little England’ or Nuwara Eliya. Covering some 300 acres, this colorful and rich display of botanical splendor with its thousands of trees and plant species is ideally visited during the months of March and April. This is when all the colorful blooms come alive attracting thousands of visitors. The famous Hakgala rock or ‘Jaw Rock’ which is above these lovely gardens is referred to in the ancient folklore of Ramayana. It is said that Hanuman the Monkey God was sent by Rama to locate and bring back a special herb from the Himalayas to heal his (Rama’s) brother who was hurt in battle. On the way, it is said that Hanuman dropped a huge chunk of an entire mountain at this location, a part of which he was supposed to have collected while bringing it to Rama, said to contain the special herbs he required. It is also believed according to ancient folklore, that King Ravana had abducted Sita and kept her hidden in this area and gifted these gardens to her as a pleasure garden. Close by is also the Hindu temple Seetha Amman Kovil or Temple generally believed to be the spot where Sita was kept.
