This magnificent and intriguing rock stands as a goliath clearly dominating the surrounding countryside and could be seen en-route from Colombo to Kandy. Bathalegala Kanda is also known as ‘Bible-Rock’ as it resembles a book or Bible open and rises to a height of more than 1,688 feet. This beautiful peak is surrounded by smaller mountains which are the Devanagala Kanda sanctified by the visit of the legendary God ‘Aluthnuwara Deviyo’ in the North-East, then the beautiful Kaithankadagala, Urakanda hillocks and the Montane Kanda, Wakirigala Kanda and Uthuwankanda seen from the north. Nature has blessed Bathalegala with a panorama of excitingly cascading waterfalls, luxuriantly rich meadows and an intriguing display of beautiful scenery.

Bathalegala is known to be situated directly under the World-Magnetic-Field-Line which makes lightning especially attracted to it. Locals in the area attest that during a lightning storm, it is inevitable that two or three bolts of lightning will almost always strike Bathalegala. There is a cave located on the summit and a small stupa and other caves that monks would use.

Although Bathalegala is seen as a single rock, its composition has changed over time owing to effects of the magnetic field, and it is believed that the stability of the rock will change over time. A rock named “Idiri Gala” which is apart from Bathalegala now was so close to Bathalegala that people say that about 50 years ago, one could jump to it rock from Bathalegala. However it has shifted away as time passed.
