Giant’s Tank Sanctuary

Yodha-wewa or ‘Giants Tank’, irrigating some 11,000 hectares of paddy cultivation southeast of Mannar, is one of the largest tanks in Sri Lanka, built by King Dhatusena (459 – 477) and fed by an ancient-restored canal bringing water from the Malwatu Oya (river).

Here, some interesting bird species could be seen, including the Great Cormorant, Pintail, Garganey, Baya Weaver, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Cotton Teal, Black Drongo, Collared Dove, Rufous-Rumped Shrike Kestrel, Striated Weaver, Spot-billed Pelican, Purple Coot, and the Common Coot.
