Kanneliya – Dediyagala – Nakiyadeniya (KDN) Biosphere Forest Reserve

This rich biosphere reserve is home to many species of plants, animal and insects endemic to Sri Lanka and covers 6,114 hectares. Declared a biosphere reserve in 2004 by the UNESCO, it is ideal for bird watching expeditions. The KDN complex is considered the next largest rainforest in Sri Lanka after the Sinharaja.

Some of the birds found here are:

Lesser-yellow-napped & Brown-Capped Pygmy Woodpeckers, Chestnut-headed Bee-eater, Ceylon Grey Hornbill, Ceylon Blue Magpie, Ceylon Jungle Spur fowl, Ceylon Bay owl, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Green-billed Coucal, Chestnut-backed Owlet, Scimitar Babbler, Black-capped, Yellow-browed and the Black Bulbuls, Spot-winged Thrush, Crested & Hawk Eagles and the Black Eagle, among many others.

A journey roughly four hours and about 165 km from Colombo gets you to the Reserve. Go up to Galle, then on the Udugama road to Panangala, and up to Koralegama and the Kanneliya Conservation Centre. The reserve comes under the purview of the Forest Department. An overnight stay at the forest department dormitory picturesquely situated at the entrance to the forest amidst green gardens and forest-fringed borders is possible, but subject to availability of space. Prior bookings could be made at their Head Office in Jayanthipura Battaramulle which is located just 5.5 km from Colombo city.
