Kitulgala – Kelani Valley Forest Reserve

This is a 1,155 hectare protected forest reserve that can be reached from the Colombo-Avissawella A7 road. Kitulgala, where the famous movie “A Bridge on the River Kwai” (A 1957 World War II epic film directed by David Lean, starring William Holden, Jack Hawkins, Alec Guinness and Sessue Hayakawa) was filmed at a location on the Kelani River near here. The Kitulgala Forest Reserve is a rich biodiverse area and is also home to its lush green, rainy forests and waterways, fauna and flora, affording hours of great fun such as white-water-rafting, jungle trail trekking, adventure activities and much more.

The Kitulgala Rest House, frequented by many travelers and tourists is found just across this forest where one can get across to it on the river by boat. Many species of birds that include the Ceylon Grey Hornbill, Ceylon Spur fowl, Ceylon Orange-billed babbler, Spotted-Winged Thrush, Ceylon Jungle Fowl, Green-billed Coucal, Ceylon Lorikeet, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Chestnut-Backed Owlet, Common Hill Mynah and the Red faced Malkoha and other similar birds found in other rain forests including the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, can also be seen here.
