Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve

This 1,528 hectare Strict Nature Reserve is made up of four peaks of the Ritigala mountain range of which the highest is the ‘Ritigala Kanda’.

According to legend, the Supernatural Lord Hanuman (the Monkey God), is believed to have dropped a chunk of a mountain from the Himalaya mountain range that he was carrying when he flew over Ritigala while traveling from India to Lanka. It is said he was bringing the mountain from India to Sri Lanka for its valuable and rare medicinal herbs which were required to cure Lord Rama's brother, Prince Lakshmana who was seriously wounded in battle.

Adding to its mystery and deep within the reserve, are the partly restored ruins of what once was a widespread monastic and cave compound.

Its beautiful surroundings makes it an ideal home to some lovely species of bird which can be observe here. They are; The Black-Capped Bulbul, Black Eagle, Brown-Capped Babbler, Black-napped Flycatcher, Crested Hawk Eagle, Common Hill Mynah, Ceylon Grey Hornbill, Crested Serpent Eagle, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Thick-billed Flowerpecker, Indian Pitta the White-Rumped Shama and many others.

Ritigala can be reached from Colombo via Warakapola, Kurunegala, Dambulla, Habarana, onto the Anuradhapura road for about 20km for the entrance to the Reserve is seen.
